Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
🏥 Medical & Safety
Who is NOT a good candidate for psilocybin?
Psilocybin is a powerful tool, but it’s not suitable for everyone. Individuals with the following conditions may not be ideal candidates:
Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or psychosis (personal or family history) – Psilocybin can exacerbate or trigger symptoms in individuals predisposed to these conditions.
Severe cardiovascular conditions – Psilocybin can temporarily increase heart rate and blood pressure, which may pose risks for individuals with heart disease.
Current or recent suicidal ideation – While psilocybin has shown promise in treating depression, those experiencing acute suicidal thoughts should seek immediate medical and psychological support before considering a journey.
Unmanaged high anxiety or PTSD – Psilocybin can amplify emotions, which can be overwhelming for those with unprocessed trauma or extreme anxiety. Proper preparation is crucial.
Can I participate if I am on SSRIs, antidepressants, or other medications?
It depends on the medication. Some SSRIs and antidepressants can dull or even block the effects of psilocybin. If you are taking:
SSRIs (e.g., Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro) – Psilocybin’s effects may be reduced, but some individuals still benefit. Consult a healthcare professional before making any medication changes.
MAOIs or other psychiatric medications – Combining psilocybin with these can be risky. Do not stop taking any prescribed medication without medical supervision.
Blood pressure medication – Some interactions may require adjustment. Consult your doctor.
Are there any physical health risks involved?
For most people, psilocybin is physiologically safe, but it can cause:
Increased heart rate & blood pressure – Important to consider if you have hypertension or heart disease.
Temporary nausea – Common during the onset of the journey.
Mild headache after the experience – Usually relieved with hydration and rest.
⚖️ Legal & Ethical Questions
Is psilocybin legal in Colorado?
Yes. Under the Natural Medicine Health Act, psilocybin is legal in Colorado. Personal use and possession are also decriminalized, but it is not legal to buy or sell outside of licensed centers.
What are the legal touchpoints allowed during the journey?
Facilitators in Colorado are legally only allowed to provide touch in limited ways, such as:
Hands, feet, and shoulders (with prior consent) for grounding and support.
No full-body contact or bodywork is permitted during the psilocybin session itself. However, somatic movement and body awareness techniques may be incorporated during preparation and integration.
🍄 The Science & Experience
What happens during a psilocybin journey?
A psilocybin journey unfolds in stages:
Onset (30-45 minutes after ingestion) – You may feel shifts in perception, heightened emotions, and body sensations.
Peak (2-4 hours in) – This is the most intense phase, where profound insights, visuals, and emotional breakthroughs often occur.
Resolution (4-7 hours in) – A gradual return to baseline with a reflective, introspective state known as the "afterglow."
How does psilocybin affect the brain and body?
Psilocybin works by interacting with serotonin receptors in the brain, particularly in areas responsible for perception, emotion, and cognition. Studies show that it can:
Increase neural connectivity – Helping break old thought patterns.
Reduce activity in the Default Mode Network (DMN) – Linked to ego dissolution and a deep sense of interconnectedness.
Promote emotional processing – Allowing suppressed memories, traumas, or emotions to surface and be released.
What if I experience fear or anxiety during the journey?
It’s completely normal to face challenging moments during a journey. These experiences often hold deep wisdom and opportunities for healing.
I will be there to support you, reminding you to breathe, surrender, and trust the process.
If needed, we’ll use grounding techniques, somatic awareness, and breathing exercises practiced during preparation.
Difficult moments are often where the greatest insights emerge—this is why intention-setting and support are so critical.
🛠 Preparation & Integration
How should I prepare for my journey?
Dietary Preparation – Eating clean, light foods 24 hours prior is recommended.
No alcohol or recreational drugs – At least 48 hours before.
Get plenty of rest – A well-rested mind and body help with emotional resilience.
Set intentions – Reflect on why you are seeking this experience.
What should I eat (or avoid) before my session?
Avoid heavy, greasy, processed foods before your session.
A light meal (fruits, vegetables, healthy fats) a few hours before is best.
Hydrate, but avoid caffeine or stimulants.
What is the role of integration afterward?
Integration is where the real work happens. Without integration, even the most profound experiences can fade over time.
Our post-journey integration session (1 week later) helps process and embody insights.
Journaling, meditation, body movement, and creative expression help anchor the experience.
Additional integration sessions are available to support long-term change.
How long will the effects last?
The active journey lasts 4-7 hours.
The afterglow effect can last for days or even weeks, where people report feeling clearer, lighter, and more connected.
Long-term effects vary—many experience lasting shifts in perspective, emotional resilience, and reduced anxiety/depression.
